Wine tasting in Spitz

After seeing the abbey, we visited the Klosterhof winery near the town of Spitz in the Wachau valley, an area of Austria famous for its wines.

Snapping a photo of the steep terraced hillside that is the vineyard.

The building is a winery and restaurant, with this pleasant outside seating area.

One of the winery's owners was our guide.

Half of the group did their wine tasting in the restaurant area, but the rest of us descended into the wine cellar to taste. On the left is a photo straight from the camera: it was really dark. On the right is the same photo with the brightness increased to a more normal level.

A winery employee served each of us.

Cheers!

We shared the room with a large wine barrel.

There were several wines to be tasted.

Matthew and Danna.

One of the wines we were served, and a set of wine lockers. Customers can purchase wine, take some of it home, and have the rest stored in the cellar in such lockers. Conditions in the cellar are perfect for storing wine, probably better than the conditions in someone's home.

This part of the cellar has lots of wine for sale, not just from this vineyard.

A room in the cellar set up as a chapel.

Back outside in the sunlight; some of the modern artwork on the grounds.

More views of the terraces. The ones on the right look untended and abandoned.

Driving along the river back to where our ship was docked.

Back at Melk to re-board the ship for the journey north to Passau.

Today the fresh towels had been made into the figure of a person.

Tomorrow morning we'll dock at Passau and leave the Amadeus Brilliant, departing by bus for Munich.
