Hungary: Szentendre and Esztergom

The afternoon's event was an excursion into the countryside of Hungary, visiting Szentendre and Esztergom. We passed this Budapest church as we made our way out of the city.

Szentendre

Szentendre is a small town that's something of an artists' colony. There are indeed some galleries selling art works, but tourism seems to dominate the town.

This shop specializes in clothing dyed a deep blue. The sign on the left, in German, literally means "blue dyer".

Looking into, and photographing, one of the art galleries.

Wine tasting

We descended into a wine cellar for wine tasting. Labirintus means "maze" in Hungarian.

We walked through tunnels with lots of wine displayed for sale.

We're awaiting our servings.

This gentleman informed us about the various wines, and served each of us.

The wines that we tasted.

The very last one we tasted was this one, a fortified wine, very dark and very sweet.

Exploring the town

Back on the street, we'll look through the town until time to depart for Esztergom.

A modern take on old-fashioned shop signs that display a representation of what's for sale rather than showing the shop's name.

Another shop selling the blue dresses, in every size.

A stall offered colorful prints of town scenes.

A very narrow passageway, and and old-fashioned book shop.

Our guides waiting for us at the center of the town square.

The cross at the center of the square, like a market cross in England, I suppose.

Art not just in the eye of the beholder, but in the eye of a needle.

Outside cafes looked inviting.

A barrel seems to be the universal sign for a wine shop.

Souvenirs with traditional Hungarian decorations: wine bottle stoppers and tops.

Two shops offered these dolls.

Ceramics and glass.

This ice cream shop was popular with our travelers.

A row of very colorful shops on a narrow street.

The Nosztalgia coffee shop, closed up tight.

Not your average souvenirs: the leopard costs almost US $1000.

Esztergom

We left Szentendre and headed for our last stop of the day, Esztergom, arriving just as the sun set. This photo was taken from Castle Hill; the town is below us.

The Basilica on Castle Hill above the town is the sight to see here. It quickly became too dark to see very much outside, but inside was lit up.

The Basilica was built in the late 19th century, along the lines of St Peter's in Rome. The interior is very grand.

The organ, high up on the back wall.

One of the side chapels.

The painting above the altar.

The painting as been damaged: a bullet hole is visible in the red cloak.

A fitting close to the day.

Our buses took us to the Esztergom dock, where our ship was waiting for us. We cruised toward Vienna during the night.
